"A day without laughter is a day wasted" -- Charlie Chaplin

Welcome to all of my fellow FIS classmates (and, of course, anyone else who stumbles into this blog) :) I'm 37 but apparently look like I'm in my 20's (it's genetics so don't ask me about cosmetics) :) I'm a single mother of an 11 year old autistic boy, fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, he is only mildly autistic. I've been in Toronto (around the Bathurst & St. Clair area) since July after finishing an undergraduate university degree in Anthropology and have started my first year at FIS in the Library Sciences stream. I hope to dispense with the cliche stereotype of the prim librarian :) I also have a calico cat named Emma (named after the Jane Austen novel). My tastes in everything are quite eclectic...in my 20's I followed a gothic/punk lifestyle and while I have changed since having a child, I have been influenced from my various and crazy experiences. I love autumn and dressing up for Halloween. I've loved dragonflies since I was a child (perhaps the dragonfly is my spirit guide?) so I have one tattooed on my back. I also have a humpback whale tattooed on my shoulder as I love their grace and song. One of my biggest influences (other than my mother and my son) is Dead Can Dance. Words cannot express the importance their music has had in my life. I consider myself to be somewhat spiritual but I cannot abide religious intolerance. I cannot abide any form of intolerance, come to think of it. Enough about me for now...

Hello! I love the colour-scheme to your blog! I was also touched that you chose to share your son's condition with us all. For the past few years I've been really concerned about how the federal and provincial governments have been dealing with the 'autism issue'. I can't stand the fact that certain families are being cut out of support and that there is an age limit for treatment... as if there's a point of no-return for our kids! Do you have any opinions on the issue? That is, only if you feel comfortable talking about it.

Hi Anna,

Thanks for your comments :) There always seems to be funding issues for practically everything. I feel lucky in that I recieved much of my funding because I started it quite a while ago. My pet peeve is that the government bases the funding more on the severity of the disability but do not take the family circumstances into account (my son has very mild autism so therefore we get the lowest amount of funding, but I'm a single parent and therefore I have no one but babysitters to rely on and who I end up paying up to $15 an hour...not that I don't believe that parents with children with more severe forms of autism don't deserve the extra funding, of course). I also don't believe there should be an age-limit either...these kids did not ask to be born this way.

Thanks Anna :)

I love Jane Austen, so I couldn't resist commenting that I highly approve of naming cats after Jane Austen's characters. :-) My favourite of the novels is Persuasion, but like the writer, I can't help myself from liking Emma.

Hi Kathryn aka Dissolved Girl:
I'm 37 too. How about that. I'll soon be posting my blog which is called Late Bloomers.
Dead Can Dance are amazing, it's true. Especially that haunting tune that was used in Baraka.
Halloween is one of my fav events. A day when the shadow in us all gets to come out and play. Ginger Snaps is excellent Halloween Eve viewing if you haven't seen it already (though not for kids).
Fields of fireflies are divine.
I almost got a tatoo of a butterfly this summer, well really a caterpillar and a butterfly (as in The Very Hungry Caterpillar picture book). This motif coincided with some personal evolution stuff.
Anyway, great blog. Very inspirational.
Kelly
P.S. I think Waterhouse did The Lady of Shallot which was the first painting that made me cry...in a good way.

Hi!

Thought I'd return the favour and post in your blog! :) It's funny we do have a lot in common! Both of us like Lord of the Rings (obviously), horseback riding and J. W. Waterhouse is my favourite artist! I have prints of his The Lady of Shalott, Ophelia, The Shrine and Miranda the Tempest hanging in my room. Very, very strange!

Thanks Elisa for your comments (I'm also a fan of Pride and Prejudice) :) Hi Erin, that is pretty cool :) Miranda, the Tempest is one of my favourites as well :) Kelly, I tried to post a comment on your blog but was told that I couldn't because I wasn't a team member...I don't get it!!

Thanks :)
Kathryn

Hi Katherine,
How are you doin'? I'm reading your blog thinking that I was 39 when I started at FIS and my daughter was a little older than your son... she's in grade 11 now and will be heading for university in another two years. Kinda hard to believe! Anyway kudos to you for taking on such a challenge along with everything else. Although the workload can be heavy I have found that time management is the key. (As every mother already knows!)BTW I told my daughte abou the LOTR tattoo and she thought it was so cool... see ya tomorrow in class!

Hi:
I admire you. I always thought it was very difficult for me to go to because of my 8 year old son, but look at you! Your enthusiasm is inspiring.
